Ask Austin Chapman, the young man with hearing loss whose new digital hearing aids recently allowed him to hear music as more than noise for the first time. He’ll probably tell you how music has added a whole new facet to his life (and to his art—he’s a filmmaker). Check out his story here.
Ask John Illsley, the bass player for Dire Straits who recently opened up about his hearing loss, and you’ll get another story. Illsley, along with many other musicians (such as Pete Townshend of The Who) blame loud music for their hearing loss.
We should learn from both perspectives. Music is something to be appreciated and enjoyed…with care.
