How Phonak Roger technology has changed Dorthe’s life

Phonak Roger technology

Dorthe Sørensen has been affected by hearing loss for the majority of her life.

“I have something called moderate hearing loss, which for me, means that I hear less on my left ear than I do on my right”, she says. For Dorthe, Phonak Roger technology, specifically Roger Select and Roger Table Mic II are important, because they improve her everyday life.

Dorthe is 56 years old and works as a therapist for young addicts. Her days are filled with conversations and meetings.

“I appreciate my Roger microphones every day,” she says. “They are always connected, regardless if I’m in private conversations, in meetings with several people, or on the phone.”

Hearing without effort

A regular day at work consists of both face to face conversations with her clients, networking meetings and, occasionally, large staff meetings where up to 25 people participate. The bigger the meeting, the greater the need is for Dorthe to have Roger microphones available and working.

“I can’t really manage without the Roger microphones in any conversation, but when many people gather, I’m even more dependent on them. In personal meetings I only use Select and for larger meetings, I use two or three Table Mic II microphones.”

Dorthe explains that evening meetings and group treatments are the most challenging. In these meetings, many people speak at the same time and there is often a lot of background noise. “These situations put additional demands on me with hearing loss, especially after a full working day”, she says.

She believes that without access to the tools she’s using today, she wouldn’t have the work life she has. To continuously push herself to hear what’s being said in each and every work situation would have taken too much effort.

“I don’t really think I would be working the way I do if I didn’t have Roger microphones,” she says. “I also see a greater risk for me to suffer from occupational burnout without my aids.”

Happy to share that she has a hearing loss

Dorthe is open about her hearing loss and tells those that she meets through her work about it. She thinks it’s much better to be open about it and she gets the chance to show what tools are available. “Many people are curious, and many are also amazed about the great technology available today,” she shares. “Technology that makes my work life a lot easier.”

It’s not only Dorthe who notice the positive side effects. She has received positive feedback from both her boss and colleagues who noticed that she is more present nowadays. This naturally relates to the fact that she now can hear everything that’s being said, without effort.

Greater freedom and better leisure time

But of course, it’s not only in her working life Dorthe notices a difference. Also, her spare time is positively influenced by the tools she uses.

“Today, I have a lot more energy for other things when I get home from work,” she explains. “For example, weight training and yoga.”

She often puts a microphone on the floor during yoga class, so she can easily hear what the instructor says. Sometimes the instructor also has a microphone, which further enhances the voice.

“It works perfectly, and yoga is at a slow pace, so I can keep up, even though I’m usually a few seconds behind the others”, she adds. “The best thing about Roger microphones is that my life works, both in my job and leisure.”

The ability to concentrate on what’s being said instead of putting all efforts on hearing, simplifies life.

“To put a microphone on my grandchildren while they are in the back of the car makes it easy for me to hear what they say. That’s also amazing”.
