Children’s book on hearing loss by child of audiologist

children's book on hearing loss

A child of an audiologist has recently published a children’s book on hearing loss called Leo’s Magic Ears. Anushka Gupta — a high school freshman — is both the author and illustrator of this uplifting book.

Inspiration for Children’s Book on Hearing Loss

As the daughter of an audiologist, 14-year-old Anushka Gupta was inspired by her mother’s work. Ever since she was a young child, Gupta was able to shadow her mom as she worked with patients with hearing loss, including young kids. Her mother has taught her about hearing loss and the field of audiology. The up and coming author has learned how hearing loss is common, and how there are treatment options that help one adapt to their hearing loss. “I wanted to write a book that would inspire and bring hope to others,” she said. “I thought that something involving the field of audiology would be a good fit.”

Gupta’s other interests include reading, writing, and playing basketball. She is also involved in her school’s debate club. Her favorite subjects are Literature, English, and History. She is considering pursuing law school. Gupta is already working arduously to help others through her first published book and is already planning another.

“Writing a book early on was an amazing experience,” Gupta said. “I hope to show that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and have the support and love around you.”

Leo’s Magic Ears

This 25-page picture book has a positive storyline about a child named Leo who has to get hearing aids. Gupta summarized the book: “Leo was a young boy who had not yet realized he had hearing loss. The story revolves around his journey as a young kid going through this big change. He eventually is happier with the hearing aids as he can understand and enjoy all that is to be heard. He can embrace the new change with a bright smile and a happy feeling in the end as he has successfully accepted the new change.”

In other words, Gupta said, this book shows that if you believe in yourself and work hard, you can accomplish your goals.
